Turn off the engine and locate the air flow sensor
Inspect the sensor connector, wiring, and intake tube for damage, dirt, or loose connections
Remove the sensor carefully if needed
Check the sensor element for contamination or debris
Reinstall the sensor securely if removed
Start the engine and observe idle quality
Unplug the sensor and see if engine behavior changes
Scan for diagnostic trouble codes with an OBD2 scanner
Compare live airflow readings on the scanner to expected values
Use a multimeter to check power, ground, and signal voltage at the connector
Test continuity in the wiring harness
Tap the sensor lightly and watch for signal fluctuations
Clean the sensor with proper mass air flow sensor cleaner if contamination is present
Replace the sensor if readings are out of specification or remain unstable
