How To Test A Circuit Breaker?

Turn off or unplug sensitive equipment on the circuit

Wear appropriate safety gear

Identify the breaker you want to test

Switch the breaker fully to the OFF position

Switch the breaker back to the ON position

Use a multimeter to check for voltage at the breaker if qualified to do so

Press the breaker’s TEST button if it has one

Confirm the breaker trips when the TEST button is pressed

Reset the breaker by moving it fully to OFF, then back to ON

Check whether the connected circuit loses power when the breaker trips

Inspect the breaker for signs of damage, burning, or overheating

Replace the breaker if it does not trip properly or shows damage

Contact a licensed electrician if you are unsure or the breaker is in a main panel
