How To Test Amps Using A Multimeter?

Set the multimeter to the correct current range: A, mA, or µA

Move the red probe to the correct current input jack

Keep the black probe in the COM jack

Turn off power to the circuit before connecting the meter

Open the circuit so current must pass through the multimeter

Connect the multimeter in series with the load

Turn the power back on

Read the current value on the display

Start with the highest current range if the current is unknown

Switch to a lower range for a more precise reading if needed

Never connect the multimeter across a power source while set to current mode

Turn off power and remove the meter after testing

Move the red probe back to the voltage jack after finishing

Check the meter’s fuse if no current reading appears
