Discharge the capacitor fully before testing
Set the multimeter to capacitance mode if available
Remove the capacitor from the circuit if possible
Connect the probes to the capacitor terminals
Read the capacitance value on the display
Compare the reading to the capacitor’s rated value
Set the multimeter to resistance mode if capacitance mode is unavailable
Touch the probes to the capacitor terminals
Watch for a low resistance that rises toward infinity
Reverse the probes and repeat the test for electrolytic capacitors
Check for a steady low resistance, which may indicate a short
Check for no change in reading, which may indicate an open capacitor
Replace the capacitor if the measured value is far from the rated value
