Disconnect the battery negative terminal
Locate the starter solenoid
Inspect the solenoid for loose, corroded, or damaged wires
Reconnect the battery
Set a multimeter to DC voltage
Check battery voltage at the battery terminals
Have an assistant turn the ignition key to START
Check for voltage at the solenoid input terminal
Check for voltage at the solenoid trigger terminal when the key is in START
Listen for a click from the solenoid
Test for voltage at the starter output terminal while the key is in START
Bypass the solenoid with a jumper cable or remote starter switch
Check whether the starter motor engages
Test solenoid continuity with a multimeter
Test solenoid resistance between the trigger and ground terminals
Replace the solenoid if it fails voltage, continuity, or bypass tests
