Use a humane live trap designed for raccoons
Place the trap along a raccoon travel route, near den sites, fences, or food sources
Secure the trap on level ground so it cannot tip over
Bait the trap with strong-smelling foods such as sardines, marshmallows, or sweet fruit
Set the trap according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Check the trap frequently, at least once every few hours and never leave it unattended for long
Wear thick gloves and avoid direct contact with the raccoon
Cover the trap with a cloth if needed to reduce stress on the animal
Relocate or handle the raccoon only as allowed by local regulations
