Rest the toe and avoid putting weight on it
Ice the toe for 15 to 20 minutes at a time every 2 to 3 hours for the first 48 hours
Elevate the foot above heart level when possible
Buddy tape the broken toe to the adjacent toe if it is not crooked or badly deformed
Place gauze or padding between the toes before taping
Wear a stiff-soled shoe or walking boot to limit toe movement
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Keep the tape clean and dry
Check for worsening pain, swelling, numbness, or color changes
Seek medical care if the toe is deformed, the nail is badly injured, the skin is broken, or you cannot walk
Seek urgent care if there is severe pain, an open wound, signs of infection, or the toe looks blue or pale
Follow up with a healthcare professional for X-rays or further treatment if needed
