Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
Test soil pH and aim for 4.5 to 5.5
Improve soil with peat moss, pine bark, or sulfur if needed
Select blueberry varieties suited to your climate
Plant in early spring or fall
Space plants 3 to 6 feet apart, depending on variety
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and as deep as the root ball
Remove the plant from its container and loosen the roots gently
Place the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface
Backfill with amended soil and firm it lightly
Water thoroughly after planting
Add 2 to 4 inches of mulch such as pine needles or wood chips
Keep mulch away from the stem
Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist
Fertilize with an acid-loving plant fertilizer as directed
Prune lightly after planting if needed
Protect plants from birds with netting when fruit begins to ripen
