Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes
Remove rings, watches, or tight clothing near the area
Gently clean the area with mild soap and water
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or aloe vera
Cover with a sterile, nonstick bandage
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen
Do not apply ice directly to the burn
Do not pop blisters
Do not use butter, toothpaste, or oils
Keep the area clean and dry
Change the bandage daily or if it gets wet or dirty
Protect the burn from sun exposure
Seek medical care if the burn is large, deep, blistering severely, on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or over a joint
Seek medical care if there are signs of infection, such as increasing redness, swelling, pus, or fever
Seek urgent care if pain is severe or the burn does not improve within a few days
