How To Treat A Hematoma?

Rest the area

Apply ice or a cold pack for 15–20 minutes at a time

Repeat cold treatment every 2–3 hours for the first 24–48 hours

Elevate the affected area if possible

Use gentle compression with a bandage if appropriate

Take acetaminophen for pain if needed

Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen unless a doctor says it is safe

Do not massage or heat the area during the first 48 hours

Monitor for increasing pain, swelling, redness, or warmth

Seek medical care if the hematoma is large, very painful, or not improving

Seek urgent care if there is numbness, weakness, trouble moving the area, or signs of infection

Seek emergency care if it follows a head injury, causes severe pressure, or you have trouble breathing or fainting
