Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes
Remove rings, watches, or tight clothing near the burn
Gently cover the burn with a clean, non-stick sterile dressing or cling film
Keep the burned area elevated if possible
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and safe for you
Do not apply ice directly to the burn
Do not pop blisters
Do not apply butter, oils, toothpaste, or home remedies
Keep the burn clean and dry
Change the dressing daily or if it becomes wet or dirty
Seek medical care if the burn is large, deep, on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or over a major joint
Seek medical care if there are signs of infection such as increasing redness, swelling, pus, or fever
Seek urgent care if there is severe pain, trouble breathing, or a chemical or electrical burn
