Wash your hands and the affected finger with soap and warm water
Soak the finger in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Gently dry the area completely after soaking
Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Cover the area with a clean bandage
Do not pick, bite, or pull the hangnail
Trim any loose skin carefully with clean nail clippers or cuticle scissors
Use a warm compress if soaking is not practical
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed and if safe for you
Keep the finger clean and protected until it heals
Seek medical care if there is pus, worsening redness, severe pain, fever, red streaks, or no improvement after a few days
