Rest the knee and avoid activities that worsen the pain
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time, several times a day

Elevate the leg when resting
Take over-the-counter pain relief such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen if safe for you
Avoid high-impact exercise until symptoms improve
Try gentle range-of-motion movements if the knee is not severely painful
Wear supportive shoes and avoid uneven surfaces
Check for swelling, redness, warmth, or injury
Seek medical care if the pain is severe, persistent, or getting worse
Seek urgent care if you cannot bear weight, have major swelling, fever, redness, or a deformed knee
