Wash hands before touching the lips
Do not pop, pick, or squeeze the blisters
Apply a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Use petroleum jelly or a bland lip balm to keep the area moist
Avoid spicy, salty, acidic, or very hot foods
Avoid lip products that sting or irritate
Drink plenty of water
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and if safe for you
Use an over-the-counter antiviral cream only if recommended for cold sores
Avoid kissing, sharing drinks, utensils, towels, or lip products
Replace toothbrushes and lip products after the blisters heal
Seek medical care if blisters are severe, spreading, very painful, or last more than 2 weeks
Seek medical care if you have fever, trouble eating or drinking, eye symptoms, or signs of infection
Seek urgent care if you have swelling of the lips or face, trouble breathing, or trouble swallowing
