Wash the bite with soap and water
Apply a cold compress for 10 minutes at a time
Keep the affected area elevated if possible
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed
Use an antihistamine for itching if appropriate
Apply a mild hydrocortisone cream for itching
Avoid scratching the bite
Monitor the bite for redness, swelling, or worsening pain
Mark the edge of redness to track spread
Seek medical care if symptoms worsen or do not improve
Get urgent help if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, severe swelling, muscle cramps, fever, or a spreading rash
Seek immediate care if you suspect a dangerous spider bite
Check your tetanus shot status if the skin is broken
