Apply a cold compress wrapped in a clean cloth for 10–15 minutes at a time

Avoid scented products, douches, bubble baths, and harsh soaps
Do not scratch or rub the area
Avoid shaving or waxing until the swelling improves
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if you can safely use it
Rest and avoid activities that worsen irritation
Use a sitz bath with lukewarm water if it feels soothing
Avoid sex until the swelling goes down
Seek medical care if swelling is severe, painful, recurrent, or lasts more than a few days
Seek urgent care if you have fever, pus, a lump, trouble urinating, or signs of an allergic reaction
