Check that the gas supply is on
Make sure the fireplace area is clear
Locate the control panel, valve, or switch
If there is a pilot light, turn the control to pilot
Press and hold the pilot control if required
Use the igniter button or a long lighter to light the pilot
Keep holding the control for the required time
Release the control and confirm the pilot stays lit
Turn the control to on
Flip the wall switch, remote, or thermostat to start the flames
Adjust the flame height if your fireplace has that control
Turn the fireplace off using the switch, remote, or control valve when finished
