How To Unclog A Garbage Disposal With Standing Water?

Turn off the garbage disposal switch

Turn off the circuit breaker to the disposal

Do not put your hand into the drain

Use tongs or pliers to remove visible debris

Place a bucket under the sink trap

Loosen the P-trap and drain the standing water

Check the trap and drain pipe for clogs

Reassemble the trap tightly

Press the reset button on the disposal if needed

Use the disposal wrench or hex key to turn the bottom shaft if it is jammed

Run cold water and test the disposal

Turn the power back on

If the clog remains, use a sink plunger over the drain

If still clogged, use a drain snake through the drain opening or trap

Avoid using chemical drain cleaners

Call a plumber if the disposal is leaking, humming without turning, or still clogged
