Turn off power to the garbage disposal at the breaker
Unplug the disposal if it is plugged in
Place a bucket under the sink trap
Disconnect the drain trap from the disposal
Remove the dishwasher drain hose if attached
Loosen the mounting ring or locking collar
Support the disposal with one hand while releasing it
Lower the disposal and set it aside
Remove the sink flange if needed
Clean off old plumber’s putty or sealant
Cap or cover any open drain connections if necessary
