Read the fabric care label and dye package instructions
Choose the correct Rit dye type for your fabric
Wash the item before dyeing
Protect your work area with plastic or old towels
Wear gloves and old clothes
Fill a container, sink, or washer with enough hot water for the item
Dissolve the dye in hot water before adding it
Add salt for cotton, rayon, or linen if directed
Add vinegar for wool, silk, or nylon if directed
Submerge the fabric completely
Stir or agitate constantly for even color
Leave the item in the dye bath for the recommended time
Check the color and leave it longer if needed
Rinse the item in cool water until the water runs mostly clear
Wash the dyed item separately with mild detergent
Dry the item away from direct heat if possible
Clean tools and surfaces immediately after use
