Fill a pot with 1 to 2 inches of water
Place the steamer basket in the pot
Make sure the water does not touch the bottom of the basket
Add the food to the basket in a single layer if possible
Cover the pot with a lid
Bring the water to a boil
Reduce to a steady simmer
Steam the food until tender
Check the water level occasionally and add more if needed
Remove the basket carefully using tongs or oven mitts
Serve the food immediately
Wash and dry the basket after use
