Shut off the main water supply to the irrigation system
Turn off the irrigation controller
Open the system’s drain valves, if installed
Drain backflow preventer components according to manufacturer instructions
Use compressed air to blow out each irrigation zone, if required for your system
Start with the zone farthest from the compressor connection
Blow out one zone at a time
Keep air pressure within the system’s recommended limit
Stop when only mist comes out of the sprinkler heads
Drain drip lines, valves, and low points
Insulate exposed above-ground pipes, valves, and backflow devices
Remove and store hose timers, hoses, and removable accessories
Set the controller to winter mode or disconnect power if needed
Close all manual drain valves after draining is complete
Check that all water is removed from vulnerable components
Inspect for leaks, cracks, or damaged parts before freezing weather
Schedule professional winterization if you are unsure about the system type
