How To Winterize Irrigation System?

Shut off the main water supply to the irrigation system

Turn off the irrigation controller

Open the system’s drain valves, if installed

Drain backflow preventer components according to manufacturer instructions

Use compressed air to blow out each irrigation zone, if required for your system

Start with the zone farthest from the compressor connection

Blow out one zone at a time

Keep air pressure within the system’s recommended limit

Stop when only mist comes out of the sprinkler heads

Drain drip lines, valves, and low points

Insulate exposed above-ground pipes, valves, and backflow devices

Remove and store hose timers, hoses, and removable accessories

Set the controller to winter mode or disconnect power if needed

Close all manual drain valves after draining is complete

Check that all water is removed from vulnerable components

Inspect for leaks, cracks, or damaged parts before freezing weather

Schedule professional winterization if you are unsure about the system type
