Type the number or text
Select the character you want to make square
Go to the Home tab
Click the Superscript button, or press Ctrl+Shift+=
For a square symbol, type ² using Alt+0178 on Windows
On Mac, press Option+00B2 in supported apps or use the Symbol menu
Insert a square shape from Insert > Shapes if you mean a square object
