Wash and dry the orange
Use a microplane, fine grater, or zester
Hold the orange firmly
Rub only the colored outer skin against the grater
Rotate the orange as you zest
Stop when you reach the white pith
Avoid grating too deeply
Collect the zest from the tool or surface
Use immediately or store as needed
