Wash your hands before touching the piercing
Clean the area with sterile saline solution 2 times daily
Use a clean gauze pad or paper towel to gently remove crust
Apply a warm saline compress for 5 to 10 minutes
Leave the jewelry in unless a healthcare professional tells you to remove it
Avoid twisting, turning, or moving the jewelry
Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, ointments, and harsh soaps
Keep clothing and waistbands from rubbing the area
Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, and oceans until healed
Change bedding, towels, and clothing regularly
Do not pick at scabs or discharge
Seek medical care if redness spreads, pain worsens, swelling increases, pus is thick or foul-smelling, fever develops, or the jewelry starts embedding
Seek urgent care if you have severe swelling, red streaks, or feel very unwell
