Dig a 1-block-deep hole
Place a water source at one end
Place lava at the other end
Let the water and lava meet to create cobblestone
Mine the cobblestone with a pickaxe
Refill the lava and water as needed
Add a piston or redstone system if you want an automatic cobblestone maker
