Defrost chicken in the refrigerator
Keep the chicken in a leak-proof container or on a plate
Place it on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator
Allow enough time for it to thaw completely
Use cold water thawing only if needed
Keep the chicken sealed in a waterproof bag
Submerge the bag in cold water
Change the water every 30 minutes
Cook the chicken immediately after cold water thawing
Use the microwave only if you will cook the chicken right away
Never thaw chicken on the counter
Never use hot water to defrost chicken
Wash hands, utensils, and surfaces after handling raw chicken
