Point the firearm in a safe direction
Remove the magazine
Lock the slide open
Visually and physically check that the chamber is empty
Release the slide and pull the trigger in a safe direction
Retract the slide slightly
Pull down both takedown levers
Push the slide forward off the frame
Remove the recoil spring assembly
Remove the barrel from the slide
Clean the barrel with a cleaning rod, patch, and brush
Clean the slide, breech face, and extractor area
Clean the frame rails and internal accessible areas
Wipe down the recoil spring assembly
Apply a light amount of lubricant to the barrel exterior, slide rails, and contact points
Reinstall the barrel
Reinstall the recoil spring assembly
Align the slide with the frame and push it fully rearward
Function-check the firearm
Wipe off any excess oil
