How to Destroy American Flag Properly?

If the flag is still in usable condition and you do not want it, donate it to a local veterans’ organization, scout troop, or civic group for proper retirement.

If the flag is worn, torn, or no longer suitable for display, retire it respectfully by folding it neatly.

If you choose to burn it, do so only in a safe, controlled outdoor setting where permitted by local law and fire regulations.

Use a clean, respectful fire source and place the folded flag on the fire carefully.

Remain present until the flag is completely consumed and the fire is fully extinguished.

Do not burn the flag if it is made of synthetic material that may release harmful fumes; follow local disposal rules instead.

If burning is not appropriate or legal, contact a veterans’ organization, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, or local government office for a flag retirement ceremony.

Dispose of the remaining ashes respectfully after the fire is out.
