Get a VHS player with working playback heads
Get a video capture device with composite or S-Video input
Get RCA or S-Video cables
Connect the VHS player output to the capture device input
Connect the capture device to a computer via USB or other supported connection
Install the capture device drivers and software
Open the capture software on the computer
Set the input source to composite or S-Video
Insert the VHS tape into the player
Rewind the tape to the beginning
Start recording in the capture software
Press play on the VHS player
Let the tape play through completely
Stop recording when the tape ends
Save the captured video file to the computer
Check the recording for audio and video sync
Trim unwanted start and end sections if needed
Convert the file to a preferred format if needed
Back up the digital file to another drive or cloud storage
