Wash your hands
Apply firm, direct pressure with clean gauze or a cloth
Keep pressure on for 5 to 10 minutes without checking
Raise the cut above heart level if possible
Rinse the cut gently with cool water
Clean around the cut with mild soap
Apply a styptic pencil, alum block, or a dab of petroleum jelly if available
Use an adhesive bandage or sterile dressing once bleeding slows
Replace the dressing if it becomes soaked
Seek medical help if bleeding does not stop after 10 to 15 minutes of pressure
Seek medical help if the cut is deep, gaping, or on the face and won’t close
Seek medical help if you feel faint, dizzy, or the bleeding is heavy
