Rest the ankle and avoid activities that cause pain
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours
Wrap the ankle with an elastic bandage for compression
Elevate the ankle above heart level as often as possible
Use crutches or a brace if walking is painful
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Start gentle range-of-motion exercises once pain and swelling begin to improve
Gradually return to weight-bearing and activity
Wear supportive shoes or an ankle brace during recovery
Seek medical care if you cannot bear weight, pain is severe, swelling is extreme, or symptoms do not improve
