Do not cauterize a wound yourself
Apply firm direct pressure with a clean cloth or sterile gauze
Elevate the injured area if possible
Rinse minor wounds with clean running water
Cover the wound with a sterile dressing
Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, deep wounds, or signs of shock
Call emergency services if bleeding cannot be controlled
Use a tourniquet only if you have been trained and it is necessary for life-threatening bleeding
Follow a clinician’s instructions if cauterization is needed
Get a tetanus shot if recommended by a healthcare professional
