Remove any visible dirt or debris with clean tweezers
Pat the area dry with a clean towel or gauze
Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment if not allergic
Cover the cut with a sterile bandage or gauze
Change the dressing daily or whenever it becomes wet or dirty
Keep the area clean and dry
Avoid picking, squeezing, or scratching the cut
Elevate the injured area if it is swollen
Use a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed if needed
Watch for worsening redness, swelling, pain, pus, or fever
Seek medical care if the infection spreads or does not improve within 24 to 48 hours
Seek urgent care if you have red streaks, severe pain, numbness, or trouble moving the area
Seek immediate medical attention if you have diabetes, a weakened immune system, or a deep wound
