Sit upright and lean slightly forward
Pinch the soft part of your nose just below the bridge
Hold the pinch continuously for 10 to 15 minutes
Breathe through your mouth
Spit out any blood in your mouth
Apply a cold compress to the bridge of your nose
Keep your head above your heart
Do not tilt your head back
Do not lie down
Do not blow your nose for several hours after bleeding stops
Do not pick or rub your nose
Use a saline nasal spray or humidifier if your nose is dry
Avoid heavy lifting, straining, and hot drinks for the rest of the day
Seek urgent medical help if bleeding lasts more than 20 minutes
Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy or after an injury
Seek urgent medical help if you feel faint, weak, or have trouble breathing
Seek urgent medical help if nosebleeds happen often
Seek urgent medical help if you take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder
