Sign the title as the seller
Enter the odometer reading if required
Complete the buyer and seller information on the title
Provide a valid smog certificate if required
Complete a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL) online or by mail
Give the signed title to the buyer
Give the buyer a bill of sale if needed
Remove your license plates unless they are transferable
Buyer submits the title and transfer application to the California DMV
Buyer pays the title transfer fee, registration fee, and use tax if applicable
Buyer obtains new registration and plates if needed
Submit the transfer within 10 days of the sale
Submit the NRL within 5 days of the sale
