How to Repack Trailer Bearings?

Park the trailer on a level surface and chock the wheels

Loosen the lug nuts before lifting the trailer

Raise the trailer with a jack and support it with jack stands

Remove the wheel and tire

Remove the dust cap from the hub

Remove the cotter pin or retainer

Remove the spindle nut and washer

Pull the hub and drum or rotor off the spindle

Remove the outer bearing

Pry out the grease seal from the back of the hub

Remove the inner bearing

Clean the bearings, races, hub, and spindle with solvent

Inspect bearings, races, and spindle for wear, pitting, or damage

Replace any damaged parts

Pack grease into the bearings by hand or with a bearing packer

Fill the bearing rollers completely with high-temperature wheel bearing grease

Apply a light coat of grease to the bearing races and spindle

Install the inner bearing into the hub

Install a new grease seal

Slide the hub back onto the spindle

Install the outer bearing

Install the washer and spindle nut

Tighten the spindle nut while rotating the hub

Back off the nut slightly until the hub spins freely with no play

Install a new cotter pin or retainer

Reinstall the dust cap

Reinstall the wheel and tire

Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern

Lower the trailer and torque the lug nuts to specification

Check for smooth wheel rotation and proper bearing adjustment

Recheck bearing play after a short test drive
