Keep your dog isolated from other dogs
Provide plenty of rest
Encourage water intake
Use a humidifier or steam-filled bathroom for short periods
Keep your dog away from smoke, dust, and strong odors
Use a harness instead of a collar to reduce throat irritation
Feed soft, easy-to-swallow food if coughing makes eating difficult
Monitor for worsening symptoms
Contact a veterinarian if symptoms last more than 1 to 2 weeks
Contact a veterinarian immediately if your dog has trouble breathing, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, or thick nasal discharge
Do not give human cough medicine unless a veterinarian says it is safe
Keep vaccinations up to date to help prevent future infection
