Check local laws, permits, and utility lines
Assess tree size, lean, decay, and drop zone
Wear PPE: helmet, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps, boots
Clear people, pets, vehicles, and obstacles from the area
Plan an escape route at a 45-degree angle away from the fall line
Determine the natural lean and intended fall direction
Remove low branches and clear the base
Cut a directional notch on the fall side
Make a back cut on the opposite side, leaving a hinge
Use wedges if needed to prevent saw pinch and guide the fall
Retreat along the escape route as the tree starts to fall
Keep watching the tree until it is fully down and stable
Limb and buck the tree only after it is safely on the ground
Stop and call a professional if the tree is large, damaged, near structures, or near power lines
