Check local laws, permits, and property boundaries before cutting
Assess the tree for size, lean, rot, cracks, dead limbs, and nearby hazards
Keep people, pets, vehicles, and structures well clear of the work area
Wear protective gear: helmet, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, long pants, and boots
Use the right tool for the tree size, such as a hand saw, pruning saw, or chainsaw
Plan a clear escape path before making any cuts
Remove low branches and obstacles around the base
Make a directional notch on the side you want the tree to fall
Cut from the opposite side to create the felling cut
Stop before the cut meets the notch and use wedges if needed
Move away along the escape path as the tree begins to fall
Wait until the tree is fully down and stable before approaching
Cut the trunk into manageable sections after the tree is on the ground
Dispose of the wood and debris according to local rules
Call a licensed arborist if the tree is large, unstable, near power lines, or close to buildings
