Check the sell-by or expiration date on the carton
Look for cracks, slime, or unusual discoloration on the shell
Do a float test in a bowl of water
Crack the egg into a separate bowl and check for a bad smell
Look for unusual color, texture, or appearance in the egg white or yolk
Discard eggs that smell sour, rotten, or sulfur-like
Discard eggs if the shell feels sticky or powdery
When in doubt, throw it out
