How to Remove a Foley Catheter?

Withdraw all fluid from the balloon completely

Gently ask the patient to take a deep breath and relax

Slowly and steadily pull the catheter out

Stop if there is resistance and do not force it

Inspect the catheter to ensure it is intact

Dispose of supplies properly

Clean the area as needed

Monitor for pain, bleeding, or inability to urinate

Seek medical help if the catheter does not come out easily or if there are complications
