How to Treat RSV in Babies?

Call a pediatrician promptly for any baby with suspected RSV

Use supportive care only unless a doctor prescribes otherwise

Keep the baby hydrated with frequent breastfeeds, formula feeds, or oral fluids if age-appropriate

Use saline nose drops and gentle suction to clear mucus

Use a cool-mist humidifier to help ease breathing

Keep the baby upright when awake to help breathing

Monitor breathing closely for fast breathing, wheezing, grunting, or chest retractions

Monitor for dehydration, including fewer wet diapers, dry mouth, or no tears

Give fever medicine only if advised by a pediatrician and dosed by weight

Avoid smoke, strong odors, and sick contacts

Wash hands often and clean shared surfaces

Seek urgent medical care if the baby has trouble breathing, blue lips, pauses in breathing, poor feeding, extreme sleepiness, or signs of dehydration

Go to the emergency room immediately for any apnea, severe breathing difficulty, or color change

Follow hospital treatment if needed, which may include oxygen, suctioning, or IV fluids

Do not give over-the-counter cough or cold medicines to babies unless specifically instructed by a doctor
