Open Steam
Click Friends & Chat
Click your profile name or status
Select Invisible
Or select Offline if available
To stay hidden, set your profile to Private in Privacy Settings
Close and reopen Steam if the status does not update
Sign out of Friends & Chat to appear offline to friends
Disable automatic sign-in if you want to stay offline on launch
