How to Cite Poetry MLA?

Cite a poem in an in-text citation with the poet’s last name and the line number(s): (Poe 4)

If the poem has line numbers, include them instead of page numbers: (Angelou 12-15)

If citing two or three lines, use a slash to show line breaks in the quotation: “…” / “…”

If quoting more than three lines of poetry, use block quotation format

For block quotations, start on a new line, indent the entire quote one inch from the left margin, and do not use quotation marks

Put the parenthetical citation after the final line of the quote, before the period if the quote ends with a period in the original

If the poem is from an anthology or collection, cite the poet in the text and include the full source in Works Cited

Works Cited format for a poem in a book: Poet Last Name, First Name. “Title of Poem.” Title of Book, edited by Editor Name, Publisher, Year, page range

Works Cited format for a poem on a website: Poet Last Name, First Name. “Title of Poem.” Website Title, Publisher if different, publication date, URL

If the poem has no line numbers, cite the page number instead: (Frost 23)

If citing a poem by title in the text, use quotation marks around the poem title

If the poem is part of a larger work, italicize the larger work’s title in the Works Cited entry
