Let the cake cool completely
Level the cake layers if needed
Place the first layer on a serving plate or cake board
Add a thin layer of frosting between layers
Stack the remaining layers
Apply a thin crumb coat over the entire cake
Chill the cake until the crumb coat is firm
Apply the final layer of frosting
Smooth the frosting with an offset spatula or bench scraper
Decorate as desired
Chill briefly before serving if needed
