Drink warm liquids (tea, broth) and plenty of water
Gargle with warm salt water (¼–½ teaspoon salt in a cup of water) several times daily
Use throat lozenges or hard candy to keep the throat moist
Take honey (1–2 teaspoons) as needed for cough/throat irritation
Use a humidifier or take steamy showers to add moisture to the air
Rest your voice and avoid whispering
Avoid smoking, vaping, and secondhand smoke
Avoid alcohol and very spicy/acidic foods
Use over-the-counter pain relief as directed (ibuprofen or acetaminophen)
Consider an over-the-counter throat spray or numbing lozenges as directed
Use saline nasal spray or rinses if post-nasal drip is contributing
Stay hydrated and get adequate sleep
Replace your toothbrush after a few days and avoid sharing drinks/utensils
Seek urgent care if you have trouble breathing, drooling, inability to swallow fluids, severe one-sided pain, or muffled “hot potato” voice
Seek medical care promptly if fever lasts more than 2–3 days, symptoms last longer than 7 days, you have recurrent sore throats, a rash appears, or you suspect strep throat (e.g., sudden severe pain, swollen tender neck glands, no cough)
Get tested for strep if recommended by a clinician or if symptoms strongly suggest it
