How to Take Measurements for a Dress?

Bust: Measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape level

Underbust: Measure directly under the bust, snug but not tight

Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of the waist

High hip: Measure around the upper hip area, about 3 to 4 inches below the waist

Full hip: Measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat

Shoulder width: Measure from one shoulder edge to the other across the back

Shoulder to bust: Measure from the shoulder point to the fullest part of the bust

Shoulder to waist: Measure from the shoulder point down to the natural waist

Shoulder to hem: Measure from the shoulder point to the desired dress length

Front waist length: Measure from the shoulder at the neck base down the front to the waist

Back waist length: Measure from the prominent bone at the base of the neck down the back to the waist

Armhole: Measure around the armhole area with the arm relaxed

Sleeve length: Measure from the shoulder point to the wrist or desired sleeve length

Upper arm: Measure around the fullest part of the upper arm

Wrist: Measure around the wrist if making fitted sleeves

Neck circumference: Measure around the base of the neck

Dress length: Measure from the highest shoulder point to the desired hemline

Skirt length: Measure from the waist to the desired hemline

Waist to hip: Measure from the waist down to the fullest hip point

Across back: Measure horizontally across the back from one armhole to the other

Across front: Measure horizontally across the front from one armhole to the other

Keep the tape snug, level, and not twisted

Wear fitted clothing or undergarments similar to what will be worn with the dress

Stand naturally while taking measurements

Record each measurement in inches or centimeters consistently
