How to Take Texture Off Walls?

Remove or cover furniture, floors, vents, and outlets

Turn off power to the room if needed

Test the wall texture for paint and texture type

Spray the wall lightly with water if the texture is water-soluble

Scrape the texture off with a wide putty knife or drywall scraper

Use a pole sander or sanding sponge to smooth remaining bumps

Apply joint compound to fill low spots and imperfections

Let the compound dry completely

Sand the wall smooth

Apply a second coat of joint compound if needed

Sand again until the surface is even

Wipe away dust with a damp cloth or vacuum

Prime the wall before painting or refinishing

Use a texture removal chemical or heat gun only if appropriate for the material

Wear a dust mask, goggles, and gloves

Repair any damaged drywall before finishing
