Gather a plain white cotton item, fabric dye, gloves, rubber bands, a bucket or basin, water, salt or soda ash if required, and plastic covering
Wash the fabric first and leave it damp
Decide on a tie-dye pattern
Twist, fold, scrunch, or spiral the fabric as desired
Secure the fabric tightly with rubber bands or string
Prepare the dye according to the package instructions
Put on gloves
Apply dye to the tied sections of the fabric
Cover all areas you want colored
Place the dyed fabric in a plastic bag or wrap it to keep it moist
Let it sit for the recommended time
Rinse the fabric under cold water until the excess dye runs clear
Remove the rubber bands or string
Wash the fabric separately with mild detergent
Dry the fabric completely
